BlackHorse Golf Club South Course is the marquee playing field at an upscale, 36-hole, daily-fee facility in the northwest suburbs of Houston. While some large houses are scattered beyond a portion of the course, for the most part the playing field sports a natural look. BlackHorse Golf Club South Course stretches from 4,839 yards to 7,191 yards from six sets of tee markers. Designers Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy created a highly varied layout that passes through distinctly different environments. Flat, open holes prevail at the outset before the routing transitions to tighter, tree-lined corridors defined by lovely mature elm, ash and oak trees. The final and most exhilarating section of the course is the stretch of holes on the back nine that rambles through an old salt mining quarry. Though BlackHorse Golf Club South Course doesn t feature much in the way of elevation changes, there s plenty of exciting movement in the land. The prevalence of water and wetlands adds beauty, challenge and thrills to the game. Water hazards enter the fray on no fewer than 11 holes and on seven of those tests the penalty areas extend from tee to green. The layout s two most exhilarating holes are the 16th and 17th. Sixteen is a great risk-reward short par 4 that tempts big hitters to try to drive the green. While birdies and even eagles are commonplace on 16, you ll be happy with par if you find the large fairway bunkers in front of the green or the water and wetlands that flank both sides of the fairway. Next up, the par-3 17th is virtually an island green set amidst a wetlands-laden lake. All of the holes in the quarry are wide open and exposed to the wind. Jacobsen and Hardy s greens are large and fast, but they don t have a lot of undulations or dramatic breaks. BlackHorse Golf Club South Course is known for its excellent conditioning. Practice facilities include a grass range, shot game area with practice sand bunker, and a putting green. The comfortable clubhouse features a pro shop, locker rooms, and a bar and restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch.
