Among the best short courses in the United States, Galloping Hill Golf Course in central New Jersey, is a challenging and beautiful par 33-layout. Also known as "The Hill," the course, which was designed by Willard Wilkinson and opened in 1928, traverses 271 acres of rolling hills and valleys. Ranked the 10th best short course in 2021 by Golf Advisor, the holes range from 125 yards to 325 yards. There are six par 4s and three par 3s, with the first four holes all par 4s. The course has no par 5s. But it certainly isn't a pushover. In fact, it has a reputation as being one of the most challenging courses in the area, and good players love to play it as well as beginners. The no. 1 handicap hole is the 333-yard second, a straightaway hole through a fairly narrow, tree-lined fairway. There is a small lake on the course between the 12th and 15th holes, but it takes a fairly wayward shot to find it. But there are plenty of bunkers, undulating greens and doglegs. Besides the golf course, Galloping Hill also has a driving range, chipping green, and practice putting green. There's also an outstanding golf academy with the latest video and swing analysis technology. Inside Galloping Hills' impressive clubhouse is a well-stocked golf shop with a great selection of apparel, accessories, and equipment. And The Hill Tavern offers a diverse menu of appetizers, sandwiches and draft beer. It's open every day. The club also offers banquet facilities for special events and weddings.
